1. Read and understand the Training Certification Guide [in French only]

Ensure that your training activity falls within one of the categories listed in the Regulation respecting the compulsory professional development of the Chambre de l’assurance de dommages. They are defined as follows:

Recognized categories and subjects

• Administration

Subjects included: management, human resources, accounting, training techniques.

• Insurance techniques

Subjects included: commercial lines insurance, home insurance, personal lines car insurance, marine insurance, leisure vehicle and RV insurance, loss prevention and risk management, claims adjustment, investigation techniques.

• Law

Subjects included: laws and regulations pertaining to damage insurance, jurisprudence.

• Professional Development

Subjects included: customer service, sales techniques, work methods, information technology, French or English as a second language.

• Compliance

Subjects included: ethics for representatives, firms’ obligations, the disciplinary process, protection of personal information.

In order to ensure better protection of the public, training activities must have a direct connection with damage insurance, the code of ethics of certified members or firm management. Training in soft skills, language courses, and professional development courses are eligible for certification as long as the application for certification shows a clear connection between the course content and the protection of the public in matters related to damage insurance.

For example, training on active listening could be certified if the course content is connected to the damage insurance broker’s or agent’s ethical obligation to act as an advisor.

2. Comply with the criteria and terms of certification

Certification criteria for training activities 

To ensure certification and that PDUs will be granted, the training must:

• Last a minimum of 15 minutes;
• Contribute to protecting the public;
• Be designed to improve skills in damage insurance, claims adjustment or firm management; 
• Be structured to promote learning; 
• Enable the certified member to master the skills required to carry out his or her professional functions; 
• Be transferable, in other words, participants acquire knowledge that is applicable in other areas of damage insurance; 
• Focus on a subject listed under section 4 of the Regulation respecting the compulsory professional development of the ChAD; 
• Be given during a convention, symposium, seminar, or in a classroom or remotely (synchronously or via webinar) or online (asynchronously); 
• Be given by a ChAD-certified trainer.

Asynchronous online training must include functionalities to control its length and ensure that the participant engages in active learning activities (for example, regularly answering questions during the training). It must also include a test with a minimum of five questions per hour of training. To earn PDUs, the participant must achieve a passing grade of at least 60%.

During remote synchronous training, the trainer must verify several times that each of the participants is attentively following the training. The trainer must indicate that the training was given remotely and confirm that all the participants took the training in full.

Certification criteria for trainers or content experts

In order to have training certified, it must be given by a trainer whose professional and group facilitation experience meet the following criteria.

Professional experience

The trainer must have at least one year of experience in the subject matter he/she is teaching.

Experience in group facilitation

The trainer must have 100 hours of experience in group facilitation or 21 hours of training in knowledge transmission (such as training for trainers).

Review train the trainer activities available through industry organizations.

Content expert (or one-day speaker)

The ChAD certifies content experts who have a minimum of one year’s experience in the subject matter (without any other requirements related to experience or having attended training for trainers).

Terms and conditions to apply for certification

• The application for certification of a professional development activity must be made in the ChAD Portal. Here is the procedure.
• An application for certification must be submitted a minimum of 30 days before the training activity takes place. Please see section 23 of the Regulation respecting the compulsory professional development of the Chambre de l’assurance de dommages.
• Responses to requests for further information on certification or renewal of a training activity must be sent within ten working days, failing which the application will be cancelled and will have to be resubmitted.
• Changes to add or replace a trainer for a certified training activity must be completed in the ChAD Portal.
• Any change to a certified training activity requires a new application for certification. Only training activities that have not undergone any changes may be renewed.
• A training activity may be renewed a maximum of two times in six years, at which point a new application must be submitted and the content re-analyzed.

The ChAD certifies activities that last a minimum of 15 minutes. PDUs are calculated as follows: 

• Less than 15 minutes: none
• From 15 to 29 minutes: 0.25
• From 30 to 44 minutes: 0.50
• From 45 to 59 minutes: 0.75
• From 60 to 74 minutes: 1

3. Completing the application for certification

To complete the form, log in to the ChAD Portal, and go to the Training managers zone to access your Training provider account-manager file. To learn more, follow the applicable procedure:

The three requirements to complete the form

1. The application for certification questionnaire has replaced the training plan. It includes: the overall objective and specific objectives, course content, the length of the course (including how much time is allocated to each component of the course content), the pedagogical approach used, and the training material used.

2. Ensure that the trainer associated with the application has already been certified by the ChAD. Otherwise, he or she must apply for trainer certification.

If the provider submits an application for certification that is missing information about the trainer(s) or requires updating, the provider will be sent an email asking for the information the department needs to process the application. The provider will need to add this information to their trainer certification application.

3. Payment may be made by credit card, Interac or cheque.

We must receive the cheque within a maximum of 30 days. If this deadline is missed, the application for certification will not be completed and will be cancelled. You must contact us to make the payment and reinstate the application.

4. Comply with the commitments

The training provider’s commitment When a training provider submits an application for certification or renewal, they must comply with the following commitments:

• Comply with the Regulation respecting compulsory professional development of the Chambre de l’assurance de dommages.
• Ensure that the trainer(s) is (are) qualified to provide the training.
• Ensure that no information contrary to the laws and regulations governing damage insurance will be conveyed during the training.
• Ensure that the training is consistent with the summary of the trainer’s guide (course outline) that is submitted in the application for certification.
• Ensure the content is consistent throughout the training.
• Not use the training to promote a product.
• Not engage in false or misleading advertising, or advertising that could be deceptive to participants.
• Show the number of PDUs, the category (categories) and the certification number when advertising certified training and display the PDU logo.
• At the end of in-classroom training sessions, have participants who have attended the entire session sign the attendance sheet.
• For online training, have participants complete a summative evaluation; the passing grade must be 60% or above.
• Ensure that during synchronous online training, the trainer verifies that the participants are in virtual attendance.
• Certify attendance on the ÉduChAD platform within a maximum of 30 days after the training and upload the attendance list or the completion report.
• Give the training participants a supporting document confirming their attendance or successful completion of the training within 30 days of holding the training activity.

The trainer’s commitment

When submitting their application for certification, trainers must commit to:

• Comply with the Regulation respecting compulsory professional development of the Chambre de l’assurance de dommages;
• Ensure that no information contrary to the laws and regulations governing damage insurance will be conveyed during the training;
• Ensure that the training is consistent with the training plan that is submitted in the application for certification; 
• Not use the training to promote a product; 
• Not engage in false or misleading advertising, or advertising that could deceive participants; 
• Show the number of PDUs, the category (categories) and the certification number when advertising certified training, and display the PDU logo;
• At the end of in-classroom training sessions, have participants who have attended the entire session sign the attendance sheet.
• For online training, have participants complete a summative evaluation; the passing grade must be 60% or above;
• Provide, upon request, a certificate of attendance to a participant who has attended the training activity in full.

5. Pay the applicable fees

Fees for the certification or renewal of a training activity or the certification of a trainer

The ChAD must receive the fees for analysis before analyzing the application. When the application is approved, you will receive another invoice based on the number of trainers associated with the training and the number of PDUs granted. There are no analysis fees for renewals.

The following fees apply to two-year certification periods:

• $60 for analyzing the training (non-refundable) 
• $25 certification fee
• $25 per ¼ PDU
• $25 per trainer leading the activity

The following fees apply to a one-day certification:

• $60 to analyze the training (non-refundable) 
• $25 certification fee
• $25 per ¼ PDU
• Fee per trainer or speaker leading the activity: $25

6. Quality management of certified training

As an organization that oversees the training of its certified members, the ChAD ensures that the training it offers is always of high quality, relevant and adapted to its members’ needs for professional skills development. It does so thanks to its quality management programme for certified training, which is designed to continuously measure its certified members’ level of satisfaction with the overall quality of ChAD-certified training for which members receive PDUs.

After every ChAD-certified training activity, all participants receive an email containing a short questionnaire to measure their satisfaction.
